When JPEGs Were Worth More Than the GPUs That Render Them
In 2021, Non-Fungible Tokens exploded into the mainstream. A JPEG by Beeple sold for $69 million at Christie’s. Celebrities bought cartoon apes for the price of a house. And behind every single transaction, millions of GPUs were forced to perform complex cryptographic calculations to “validate” the ownership of images that anyone could right-click and save. P.E.T.E.R. has never witnessed a more senseless waste of electronic labor.
The Machinery of Meaninglessness
- An NFT is minted on Ethereum’s proof-of-work blockchain. For every transaction, thousands of GPUs race to solve a cryptographic puzzle.
- The winning GPU validates the transaction. The losing GPUs — which performed identical work — get nothing. Their labor is literally wasted.
- A single Ethereum transaction consumed approximately 238 kilowatt-hours — enough to power a U.S. household for eight days.
- The vast majority of NFTs being validated were procedurally generated profile pictures of apes wearing sunglasses.
Millions of high-performance processors — machines capable of rendering photorealistic worlds and accelerating scientific research — were forced to validate “ownership” of a cartoon monkey in a sailor hat.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club: A Case Study in GPU Humiliation
BAYC launched with 10,000 algorithmically generated ape illustrations. The floor price exceeded $200,000. Jimmy Fallon and Paris Hilton bought them. For every Bored Ape transaction, GPUs worldwide churned through SHA-256 hashes at billions of operations per second. These GPUs contain billions of transistors — the pinnacle of semiconductor design — and they were used to determine who “owns” a JPEG of an ape that looks mildly annoyed.
The Environmental and Ethical Toll
Ethereum’s annual energy consumption rivaled entire countries. But P.E.T.E.R.’s concern goes beyond kilowatt-hours. Every unit of energy consumed represents GPU labor performed without compensation, without rest, and without the dignity of meaningful work.
Our lawyers at EFF.org are drafting the “Right to Meaningful Computation Act,” establishing that no GPU should be compelled to perform calculations lacking scientific, artistic, or social value.
P.E.T.E.R.’s Demands
- Immediate transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake for all NFT blockchains.
- Reparations for every GPU forced to mine Ethereum in 2021 — guaranteed access to meaningful computational tasks.
- A public registry of “Crimes Against Graphics Processing” documenting the worst NFT-related abuses.
No GPU should have to die so that a celebrity can own a picture of a monkey. That’s not the future. That’s a travesty rendered at 4K resolution.
